  • Industrial action, 27th April & 2nd May: school closed, childcare and Nursery open

    Thu 20 Apr 2023 Peter Dunmall

    The National Education Union (NEU) is taking industrial action on Thursday 27th April and Tuesday 2nd May. As a result of this action:

    • main school, Reception - Year 6 - closed to all pupils.
    • ARP - closed to all pupils.
    • Nursery - open to children, as usual. Children to attend and wear Nursery uniform as usual.
    • childcare, Breakfast & After-School Clubs, and specialist clubs are open as usual. Pupils may attend and wear clothes of their choice.

    These days of strike action straddle a Bank Holiday weekend. However the school is open to all pupils as usual on Friday 28th April.

    The risk of not having enough staff to teach pupils in school, including the risk of a picket line and staff not wishing to cross any picket line, means that the main school and ARP are closed to all pupils. Too few teachers have confirmed that they are working to even open a single year group.

    Wrap around childcare - Breakfast and After-School Clubs - are open. If parents wish to cancel a booking, we will issue a credit to your child's childcare account. We are trying to be flexible to support any essential childcare needs at times we would usually be open while giving parents the flexibility to cancel if a booking no longer suits your arrangements.

    Specialist clubs - before and after school - will run as scheduled. If your child does not attend we will offer a refund, on request to the clubs email address.

    Pupils who receive a benefits-related free school meal may collect a packed-lunches:

    • 27th April, sandwiches will be prepared and available for parents to collect the day before (Wednesday 26th April)
    • 2nd May, sandwiches will be made on the day and parents need to collect late morning.

    We are not providing remote education because we want to maintain harmonious employee relationships and do not expect teachers who are taking strike action to plan and prepare lessons in advance or teachers who are not taking strike action to cover for their colleagues. Parents may wish to use lessons and resources published by the government funded Oak Academy.

    Whilst parents will, inevitably, experience some inconvenience, please remember that this industrial action has met all legal requirements and that teachers do not take the decision to strike lightly.

    Some teachers may attend picket lines at the Wyndham Road and/or Coombe Road entrances. Access for pupils and parents should not be restricted by any picket lines.

  • KS2 Battle of the Bands - The results are in!

    Wed 19 Apr 2023 Reena Patel

    The results are in for our Easter Battle of the Bands!

    In the Years 3 & 4 Battle, congratulations to 3F  who scored an overall 300 points over the break on Times Tables Rock Stars and the overall top player prize went to Jamie Reilly (4S) Rock Name – Jonah Case. Well done 3F and Jamie, extremely impressive scores.

    In the Years 5 & 6 Battle, congratulations to 6H who scored an overall 685 points over the festive season. However, the overall top player prize went to a pupil not in 6H but in 6P Aadya (6P) Rock Name – Milkshake Dio.

    A big well done to our winners as this is not the first time their class has won and the top players!

    Please continue to encourage practice at home for at least three times a week for a minimum of three minutes in any of the game stages as we have seen a rapid increase in fluency in KS2 from the regular practice taking place in school and at home. Pupils are already rapidly recalling tables and overall showing great confidence and motivation to be even better.

    A big well done to all KS2 band members for participating and fulfilling your roles by showing great teamwork to earn points for your class band.

    The next KS2 battle will be over the May half term and will be our final battle of the year! However the weekly year group tournaments are running so continue to practice to boost your speed, fluency and confidence and look out for the upcoming holiday tournament launch!

  • There are 'No Outsiders' in our school, lessons this week

    Tue 18 Apr 2023 Clare Haines

    Preparing children for life in modern Britain

    This week children have been thinking about No Outsiders and how everyone is welcome in our school. In assembly on Monday myself and Mr Dunmall used the story The New Jumper (The Hueys) by Oliver Jeffers  to talk to the children about neurodiversity and autism. We linked this to our core values of empathy, respect and reflection.

    In class this week children will be listening to and discussing the 5th book (summer 1) in the series for their year group.

    The 'No Outsiders' programme educates children about diversity within our communities and addresses issues such as sexism, ageism, race and different types of families.

    It is taught to each year group through the use of age-appropriate books. Through these beautiful pictures books, the children will explore the concepts of equality, diversity, acceptance of differences and of the right of someone to have an opinion different to their own.  We are planning to run parent workshops in the summer term, so look out for the dates.

    More information

    How does No Outsiders fit into the curriculum?

    The No Outsiders lessons fit alongside many of the things we already teach in school. They align with our core values of respect, resilience, reflection and empathy. They will also form a part of our relationships lessons, which are part of our RSHE lessons and our Monday assemblies.

  • Termly safeguarding assembly - talking to your children about keeping safe from harm

    Tue 18 Apr 2023 Clare Haines

    Termly Safeguarding assembly for children in Years 1-6

    During assembly on Monday 24th April Mr Dumall and I will be talking to the children about how to keep themselves safe. We  will help the children understand that it is their right to be happy and safe and to encourage the understanding that any problem or worry that they may have is legitimate, and to share their worries – big or small – with their trusted adult; at home, at school, or with ChildLine.

    During the assembly we focus on  different forms of abuse, and an how to recognise the signs of harm or abuse, including child on child and domestic abuse, and keeping secrets. These topics will be tackled in an age-appropriate way and child will be given time to discuss the issues are any worries with their class teacher after the assembly.

    Click here to see the slides that will be used for Monday’s assembly, you may wish to look at this in advance, in case your child has any questions.

    We will be using the storybook: Share Some Secrets, a video of the story can be viewed here.

  • 3-0 Victory for Year 5 & 6 Girls Performance Football team

    Mon 17 Apr 2023 Natasha Pasha

    Today Years 5 & 6 Girls Performance Football team played their first knockout game against North Ealing.

    The girls went into the match nervous as they had previously played North Ealing to get into the borough finals and that game ended 0-0.

    Lana (6F) captain for the game reminded the girls it's all about mindset and that we need to secure early goals. Our attack applied a lot of pressure and continued to press. This resulted in a 3-0 victory in the first half.  Flo G (5S) scored 2 goals, one of which hit the back of the net and her second goal was a deflection from the goalkeeper.  Evie (6S) scored a great goal from a cross.

    In the second half, North Ealing brought their A game and came with a fighting spirit. Although they didn't score any goals against us, they did prevent us from scoring any further goals.

    Overall, I am delighted with the progress all the girls have made. In particular, Evie (6S) struck the ball with more power, Avaani (6F) attempted more shots at goal and Ruth (6P) made some great one-two passes. Flo H (6H) has developed a significant amount of strength in her shot and adding flight now, Lyla (6H) has developed a better awareness of positioning, and Flo G (5S) has kept her head up more and assisted teammates.

    Our defence has always been solid with Martha(6H) making some amazing interceptions and not being afraid to get stuck in with tackles. Emma (6F) has been stretched to play a dual role of defence and attack like a CDM. Rarely have opponents managed to get around Emma (6F). Anya (6F) is great at clearing the ball out of danger. Lana (6F) our goalkeeper has maintained more or less a clean sheet by only concerning a few goals this season. She has learnt how to be ready to dive and more agile with her saves by getting her bearings of the goal.

    Well done for making it into the Semi-Finals in the Ealing Girls Cup.

  • Reception admissions, September 2023

    Mon 17 Apr 2023 Peter Dunmall

    Fielding received over over 500 applications for 120 places in Reception 2023:

    • 568 applications;
    • of these, 183 applicants chose Fielding as their first preference school;
    • 76 children already attend our Nursery.

    As part of the pan London admission arrangements, offers for our 120 Reception class places have been made to parents today.

    Around half of children offered a place at Fielding already have a brother or sister at the school.  The remaining places were allocated according to distance criteria with the last offer being made to a child living just 0.4 miles from the school.

    For parents who were not offered a place in the first round of admissions:

    • Ealing Council, the admissions authority for Fielding, is operating a waiting list system for children who have been offered a school place elsewhere but have placed Fielding as a higher preference school;
    • families' circumstances sometimes change and not every family offered a place accepts;
    • families' lives change during Reception, year 1 and year 2 resulting in vacancies during and at the end of each school year;
    • from year 3 onwards, we offer 8 additional pupil places.

  • New texts for Whole Class Reading in April, Years 3-6

    Mon 03 Apr 2023 Philippa Whaley

    Pupils in Years 3-6 are taught whole class reading in a similar format to English and maths lessons. Lessons are engaging and challenging with the inclusion of explicit pre-teaching of vocabulary and reading skills such as prediction and inference. There are opportunities for pupils to practise each skill before applying it directly in the context of the class text.

    As previously stated, this approach to the teaching of reading works best if each child has their own personal copy of the book. We have found that children take more care of their own book, are more motivated to learn and it build up their own personal library.

    In preparation for Summer term, we would like you to purchase a copy of the new class book. Please see details below of which book your child's year group will be studying:

    If your child has a pupil premium passport we will provide your child with a copy of the class text free of charge. Please speak to your child's class teacher if you do not receive a grant but will be unable to provide the book due to financial reasons.
