  • Ofsted inspection framework for September 2019

Wed 13 Feb 2019 Peter Dunmall

Consultation, changes and implications for Fielding

Ofsted has published its proposed inspection framework for September 2019.  Parents, along with a wide range of other stakeholders, are being asked to respond to their consultation about the changes.  The consultation closes on 5th April.

The draft framework gives us a clear indication of how schools will be held accountable from September.  Schools judged to be 'outstanding' at their last inspection, like us, continue to be exempt from routine inspection.  However, we will judge ourselves against the new framework so that we continue to give our pupils the best possible education that we can.

    Key changes include:

    • a sharper focus on curriculum through the new 'quality of education' judgement;
    • separate judgements for 'personal development' and 'behaviour and attitudes';
    • the lead inspector spending more time in the school for 'on-site' preparation time;
    • no use of school's own internal pupil progress and attainment data;
    • checking how well leaders are managing workload for teachers.

As a part-time inspector for Ofsted, I have a good understanding of the reasons for change as a result of being involved in Ofsted's conference and training events over the last 18 months. Consequently, Fielding is well placed for the changes when they are implemented.

Relevant areas for our current work include:

    • Sharpening our curriculum with a clearer focus on our intent, implementation and impact.  Mr Lewis, Assistant Head teacher for curriculum, is leading a team of teachers to make better links within, between and across age-groups and subject areas.  We are especially working on continuity and progression in knowledge, skills and vocabulary.  Work in this area will continue beyond September 2019.
    • A need to build on our Values-based ethos, strengthen the teaching and learning of MindUp; sharpen our behaviour management and make better links between our values and their impact on behaviour.  Miss Stabler, Assistant Head teacher for personal development and behaviour, has been researching, refining and working with our staff team to make whole-school improvements since September.  She will publish new arrangements ready for the Summer Term shortly.
    • SPTO, our system for tracking and analysing pupils' progress and attainment, is closing - partly as a result of these changes.  Mrs Haines, Deputy Head, who leads all of our assessment routines, is working with Assistant Heads, Year Leaders and SENDCo, to refresh all of our principles about assessment and to find a new system that better meets our needs.  How we report to parents about progress will also change with the closure of SPTO.  More broadly, we are reviewing all of our information management systems, seeking to integrate and improve them wherever possible, including Laser.
    • Continue reducing teachers' workload, finding more efficient ways of doing our work.

Ofsted is encouraging parents to find out about the proposed changes and to respond to the consultation:

  • Climate change school strikes: open as usual

Mon 11 Feb 2019 Peter Dunmall

Over the weekend, a number of national newspapers reported that pupils in the UK are taking strike action by walking out of lessons about climate change this Friday.  Reports focus on secondary age pupils.

We are expecting to be open as usual without any pupil walk-outs on Friday.  Whilst I understand pupils’ interest in the protest, I also cannot condone missing a day of education - a view shared by the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), my professional association.  Therefore, if parents and pupils decide to protest, absence will be unauthorised.

However, our pupil Eco-committee, led by Mr Webb, will be discussing why some older students have decided to take action in this way.

These can be purchased from the majority of sports stores or alternatively you can purchase them from the school for cost price.

Shinpads will cost £2.50 and come in medium or small size.

  • Multi-sport playing surface consultation

Fri 08 Feb 2019 Peter Dunmall

The Governing Body is seeking to install a multi-sports playing surface, up to 1,820m² (34.5m x 52.75m) in size with floodlights and boundary fencing on our existing grassed playing field to enable all-year round sports and play provision during and after the school day.

We are inviting stakeholders, including neighbours, local residents and parents, to shares their views about our proposal so that we can make this change for our pupils and community in the best way possible.

The school playing field is important to the school sports curriculum, and highly popular with children during dry periods, but it is prone to water-logging and becoming slippery with mud, which means much of the year it is not used.  With the nationwide emphasis on increasing sports and physical activity for primary school children we need a space that we can use all year round. This is why we are proposing a new multi-sports playing surface.

    Intended benefits include:

    1. All-year round use for teaching of National Curriculum PE, unrestricted by wet weather, improving the flexibility, continuity and progression of sports skills, knowledge and understanding.
    2. All-year round extra-curricular clubs.  The school will be able to provide a full, all-year programme of extra-curricular sport, unrestricted by wet, mud or darkness, enabling our provision to match current demand from pupils and parents.
    3. All-year round lunchtime provision.  Pupils will be able to take part in coaching and intra-school competitive sport led by external sports coaches unrestricted by wet weather, improving flexibility and continuity of sports provision.
    4. All-year round competitive inter-school sports.  Pupils from local schools will be able to take part in competitive events unrestricted by wet weather.
    5. Provide exit route opportunities to local sports clubs and groups for pupils and their families resulting in further take-up of sports opportunities in addition to the school’s provision.
    6. Provide a facility for established Ealing sports club(s) who are seeking a base for training junior members.
    7. Make a positive contribution towards one of the Council’s three main priorities, ‘Making Ealing a Healthier Borough’.
    8. The all weather surface will give pupils an additional 1,820m2 for use during break times, resulting in 60% more outdoor space for all-year play, when the playing field is unusable during winter and spring months.

Many parents cherish the school's open space.  Other parents acknowledge the school's successful development of our site including our kitchen garden and Fielding forest.  Through our proposal, we are seeking to continue to best use our outside space for pupils while maintaining the sense of open playing fields.  Sport England works to protect playing fields from development.  Our proposal must gain its approval or planning permission will not be granted.

The capital cost of the proposed multi-sport playing surface will be fully funded from the school’s reserves.  Reserves have accrued as a result of a surplus from the school’s traded activities, including childcare, school meals contract rebate, services to other schools and lettings.  Funding is not being used from the school’s annual income from the government, intended for the education of pupils.  We are spending some of this additional income now on improving our facilities rather than employing more staff to work with pupils in class because the school faces a large deficit in 2-3 years time when the government's National Funding Formula takes full effect.  We will then use our additional income from our traded activities to offset this deficit and preserve our current provision.

Please read our consultation information and share your views with us:

  • Nursery Half-Term Holiday Club

    Fri 08 Feb 2019

This February half-term Fielding Nursery are planning a mixture of messy play activities, including multi-colour spaghetti, foam play, cornflour and much more, we want to excite the children’s senses and encourage hands on experiences. We will be baking a present for our families, and getting arty and crafty. The children really enjoy exploring Fielding’s forest, and ‘ships ahoy’ aboard the Pirate Ship, we will be adding some loose parts for them to create and build while exploring new materials. These exciting activities are open to all children currently attending our nursery, to secure your place please log into your Laser account.

Fees for holiday club sessions will be added to your Laser cashbook at the time of booking.

Please be careful when booking your sessions, as once selected and confirmed, you are unable to request a change and will be charged for your booked sessions regardless of whether your child attends.

Do make sure your child is dressed in old clothes and brings their coat to nursery as it can get very windy on the school field.

Please provide a wholesome healthy packed lunch and tea for your child, and please do check that any food sent in with your child does not contain nuts/traces of nuts or sesame, thank you. The children will have access to fruit as usual throughout the day.

  • Check your child's hair regularly for head lice

    Thu 07 Feb 2019 NHS

To prevent the spread of head lice the NHS has produced these guidelines. Please could you regularly check your child's hair and ensure long hair is tied back.

    Head lice and nits

Head lice and nits are very common in young children and their families. They don't have anything to do with dirty hair and are picked up by head-to-head contact.

How to get rid of head lice

    • You can treat head lice without seeing a GP.
    • Treat head lice as soon as you spot them.
    • You should check everyone in the house and start treating anyone who has head lice on the same day.
    • There's no need to keep your child off school if they have head lice.

    Wet combing

Lice and nits can be removed by wet combing. You should try this method first.

You can buy a special fine-toothed comb (detection comb) online or from pharmacies to remove head lice and nits.

There may be instructions on the pack, but usually you:

    • wash hair with ordinary shampoo
    • apply lots of conditioner (any conditioner will do)
    • comb the whole head of hair, from the roots to the ends

It usually takes about 10 minutes to comb short hair, and 20 to 30 minutes for long, frizzy or curly hair.

Do wet combing on days 1, 5, 9 and 13 to catch any newly hatched head lice. Check again that everyone's hair is free of lice on day 17.

For more information about wet combing, see the Community Hygiene Concern website.

    Medicated lotions and sprays

Ask your pharmacist for advice if you have tried wet combing for 17 days, but your child still has live head lice.

They may recommend using medicated lotions and sprays. These kill head lice in all types of hair, and you can buy them from pharmacies, supermarkets or online.

Head lice should die within a day. Some lotions and sprays come with a comb to remove dead lice and eggs.

Some treatments need to be repeated after a week to kill any newly hatched lice.

Check the pack to see if they're OK for you or your child and how to use them.

If lotions or sprays don't work, speak to your pharmacist about other treatments.

Some treatments aren't recommended because they're unlikely to work.

    For example:

    • products containing permethrin
    • head lice "repellents"
    • electric combs for head lice
    • tree and plant oil treatments, such as tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil and lavender oil herbal remedies

    You can't prevent head lice

There's nothing you can do to prevent head lice.

You can help stop them spreading by wet or dry combing regularly to catch them early.

Do not use medicated lotions and sprays to prevent head lice. They can irritate the scalp.

There's no need for children to stay off school or to wash laundry on a hot wash.
