Fielding
Primary School and Nursery
Keep up to date with all the news happening in the school at the moment. Articles are added during the week. Parents are encouraged to check regularly. Our weekly bulletin, emailed directly to parents, summarises content for the week.
On Monday morning pupils at Fielding joined people across Europe to take part in a minute's silence to remember those affected by the attacks in Paris.
If individual pupils or groups of pupils wanted to talk about their understanding or any worries associated with the attacks, teachers in school were ready to listen and support. However teachers have not directly taught or explicitly covered any of the issues associated with the attacks.
"We recognise that pupils will have a wide range of understanding about the attacks in Paris. Some of our families are French and may have been particularly affected by the events over the weekend. Teachers are ready to listen and support pupils on an individual basis, " added Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.
Resources to support parents' own understanding about extremism and keeping children safe on-line is available from the school's web-site:
Anti-bullying week was launched to children today during assemblies. Children had the opportunity to discuss their understanding of what bullying is and what to do if they are being bullied or if they witness bullying.
"Children enjoyed the opportunity to discuss different scenarios," explained Mrs Haines, Deputy Head. "They demonstrated a good knowledge of what bullying is and what it isn't. Children were reminded of the steps to be taken if they are worried about bullying."
The boys football team narrowly missed out on 1st place in the Ealing football league on Thursday 12th November. There were 9 schools in the league this year which was played over 2 days. The boys played some great football, winning 7 out of 8 games which earned them silver medals. Although the boys were disappointed to miss out on 1st place they should all be proud of the work that they put in. For a full write up of every game, check out the PE and Sport page on the school website.
Year 3 have been learning about Diwali, the Hindu ‘festival of lights’. The children have listened to the story of Rama and Sita and retold it through play scripts. Children were able to show October’s value of Unity and November’s value of Responsibility by working in groups to perform the story. Children also created shadow puppets of the main characters in the story to use in their performance. We were able to get creative when children designed a colourful diva lamp each. Miss McGee said ‘I could really see how much the children appreciated the opportunity to show case their creativity while learning about a new topic.’ Parents/carers are welcome to join us in celebrating Year 3’s Diwali learning on Friday 13th November from 3 o’clock in Year 3 classrooms. We look forward to seeing you there.
This half term, Year 6’s learning journey has involved travelling back to the time of the Vikings! Last Wednesday, Year 6 dressed up as Vikings and participated in engaging and enriching activities to introduce them to their new learning challenge. This included creating Viking Longships out of clay, making Viking shields and even a Viking fashion show to celebrate the effort the pupils had put into their costumes.
Year 6 leader, Miss O’Dwyer explained, “Introducing our new learning challenge in this way has been hugely successful in engaging the children in their learning across the curriculum.”
This week in R.E., pupils have discussed the Hindu story of Rama and Sita and they have created beautiful Diwali-inspired artwork with chalk and black paper. In English, they have researched different aspects of Indian culture and traditions using a selection of non-fiction texts and pupils created their own India fact files based on the information they acquired. “I’m really enjoying finding out about India, it is such an interesting country” said Margaux in 1S.
Parents are invited to hear more about the Fielding Learning Challenge curriculum and our approach to homework next week.
Following the success of our first parent session this year focusing on assessment, this is the second in a series of sessions planned for the school year. School leaders will briefly present details about an aspect of our work before taking questions and hearing feedback from parents in an open forum.
Assistant Head teachers, Clair Biedul and Laura Stabler, are looking forward to sharing their work about the curriculum and homework with parents on Wednesday. Senior Leaders, Peter Dunmall and Clare Haines, will take questions and hear feedback at the end of the session.
"Over 200 parents joined us for the assessment session at the start of the school year, raising insightful questions and giving us valuable feedback, " explained Mrs Haines, Deputy Head teacher.
Fay Block, mum to children in Nursery, Year 1 and Year 3, has been elected as our new parent governor. Ballot results:
Eight blue ballot papers were not accompanied with a white parent declaration form and five papers were blank or spoilt. None of these papers were counted.
"It's a strength of our parent community that four parents wanted to become a governor and were nominated. I look forward to working with Faye as a governor and would like to thank all candidates for their support and interest in the school, " said Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.
Fay will complete an induction process as a new governor before attending her first full governing body meeting in December.
Last year we were delighted with some of the images that pupils produced to represent our school values. Pupil’s designs were used on reflection posters and displayed in every classroom.
We are running another values poster competition this year for all pupils from Reception to Year 6. Each year group has a different value to create a design for. “We are looking for visually striking images to accurately represent the reflection points of our values. Example images can be found on the poster format available to print from the ‘letters’ page of the school website.” explained Mrs. Tate, Assistant Head.
Pupil’s designs will be shortlisted by voting in classes and winners will have their images displayed around the school, as well as on reflection posters and the school website.
Designs will need to be submitted to class teachers by Thursday 19th November.
