  • New Texts for Whole Class Reading for Summer 1, Years 2-6

    Sun 27 Mar 2022 P. Whaley

Since September, pupils in Years 3-6 have been taught whole class reading in a similar format to English and maths lessons. Lessons are engaging and challenging with the inclusion of explicit pre-teaching of vocabulary and a range of reading skill practice such as retrieval and inference. In Spring 2, pupils in Year 2 began their exciting journey into Whole Class Reading alongside Years 3-6.

As previously stated, this approach to the teaching of reading works best if each child has their own personal copy of the book. We have found that children take more care of their own book, are more motivated to learn and it build up their own personal library.

In preparation for Summer 2 (April 20th), we would like you to purchase a copy of the new class book. Please see details below of which book your child's year group will be studying:

    • Year 2 -  The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl  ISBN-13 978-0141346663
    • Year 3 -  A Poem for Every Summer Day by Allie Esir (A Poem for Every Day and Night of the Year, 3) Paperback – 29 April 2021 ISBN-13 978 1529045246
    • Year 4, Summer 1 -  The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Rauf ISBN-13: 9781510105010
    • Year 4, Summer 2- H20, Poems by John Agard

      ISBN-13 978-1444917727

    • Year 5 - Poems to Save the World by Chris Riddel  ISBN-13 978-1529040111
    • Year 6 - Time Travelling with a Hamster by Ross Welford ISBN-13 978-000815631

If your child has a pupil premium passport we will provide your child with a copy of the class text free of charge. Please speak to your child's class teacher if you do not receive a grant but will be unable to provide the book due to financial reasons.

  • Your child's attendance, aiming for 97%

Fri 25 Mar 2022 Clare Haines

Each term we review your child's attendance at school. We aim for all pupils to attend school regularly, this means attendance of 97% and above. We know that specific health needs and COVID have had  an impact on school attendance for some pupils this year.

The Department for Education (DfE) are clear, attendance at school should be prioritised as there has been too much disruption to schooling over the last two years.

DfE guidance tells us that we must:

‘regularly communicate expectations for attendance and punctuality and school performance through your regular channels of communication with staff, pupils and parents

‘establish robust escalation procedures which are initiated before absence becomes a problem, for example by: sending letters to parents and carers

    January 2022

We know that events come along in life, children become unwell, medical appointments need to take place. The DfE suggests good attendance is 95%, this allows for these life events. In a school year of 190 days this is around 10 days absence. Attendance that falls below 95% becomes a concern, because it can easily slip to 90%,  just another 9 days absence. This is the equivalent to 1 day in every 2 weeks.

    For us, attendance of:

    • 94%-95% is starting to cause a concern.
    • 96-97% is good attendance,
    • over 97% is excellent – this is our target for your child.

In line with government guidance and our attendance procedures, before the Easter break, will be sending out letters to parents of all pupils whose attendance has fallen below 95%, whether this has been for COVID or not.

Any absence, authorised or not are registered as non-attendance at school and count towards your child’s overall attendance. There are very few things that don’t count towards this overall attendance figure. If your child is not on the school premises, they are absent from school, whatever the reason.

    This includes:

    • Illness, including self-isolation, even if you have followed our absence procedures, or we have asked you to collect your child
    • medical appointments (including speech and occupational therapy)
    • authorised leave for exceptional circumstances
    • being late after the registers close
    • your child not wanting to come due to anxiety
    • open days at other schools
    • religious observance
    • exclusions or suspensions
    • remote or hybrid learning at home (not waiting for a PCR test result)
    • any unauthorised absence

The following do not count towards school attendance figures:

    • isolating while waiting for a PCR result
    • authorised school activity (e.g. trips during the school day with the class, sporting events, school entrance examinations)

We report your child's attendance information to you in two ways:

    • MCAS, if you click ‘more’ in the attendance box, you will be able to see your child’s uptodate attendance, this percentage includes any self-isolation for COVID
    • Annual reports, at the end of the year we report your child’s attendance to you, this will also include any absence for COVID

If you have any worries or concerns about attendance at school please contact Marsha Coppin-Payne, our attendance administrator or arrange to speak to your child's class teacher.

  • Recommended reading congratulations, time to celebrate reading.

    Thu 24 Mar 2022 P. Whaley

Now that Reward Assemblies have resumed in halls, it has been a pleasure to see so many pupils at Fielding being awarded Bronze, Silver, Gold and even Platinum Reading Awards. These are achieved for pupils having read  5, 10, 15 or all 40 books from their year group recommended reading lists and completing response activities (from the options provided in their reading record).

Next week, pupils in Years 3-6 will be spending a Whole Class Reading lesson working on writing a response activity as a class for a recommended reading book that they've read during Story Time, English or Whole Class Reading. This will be a perfect opportunity for those who haven't started already to begin their journey towards achieving reading awards. Response activities can be submitted to class teachers on Teams under their class notebook, in the recommended reading section (please see picture below) or handed in to their class teachers in person. We look forward to celebrating more reading achievements next week! You can view your child's recommended reading list when you sign their reading record or click on this link and scroll to the bottom of the page. English | Fielding Primary School.

Recently, £3000 has been spent on updating the book stock in the KS1 and KS2 libraries and in Summer Term, our newly updated recommended reading lists will be published in line with our purchase of copies of new books for class book corners. Please do continue to take the time to read with and/or listen to your child read for 20 minutes and sign their reading record daily. This is invaluable as it instils a love of reading amongst our pupils and essential to teachers as they continue to monitor the books that their pupils are reading at home and recommend new books based on their interests.

  • Fielding win 3 out of 4 in Girls Football League

Thu 24 Mar 2022 Dan Thomas

Today, the Fielding Girls Football team were at Gunnersbury Park competing in the second round of fixtures in this years brand new Featherstone Girls Football League.

There were a few debuts being made today but after a good training session this morning the girls were ready to go. Our first game today was up against Lady Margaret Primary School in a game which we started really well. The girls were putting Lady Margaret under pressure from the kick off and this paid off as we won 3-0.

In game number 2 we had Clifton. Clifton had a good team and gave us a very tough game. It was end to end with both teams having chances but it was us who finally found the breakthrough to win the game 1-0.

Our third game of the day was against league favourites, Oaklands. We knew we would have to play our best game of the day in order to get this win. We were brilliant in defence and stopped them time after time, with our keeper making save after save but we couldn't hold on. Oaklands did find the back of the net eventually and beat us 2-0.

St. Mark's were our last game of the day and we knew this would be another tough game. We were on the backfoot for most of the game but defended excellently once more. In the final minutes of the game we had a goal kick which got sent long to the other side of pitch. Our striker pounced on the ball to put the Oaklands goalkeeper and defender under pressure and somehow we squeezed the ball into the net for a 1-0 win.

The girls were fantastic today and put us in a great position as we now look forward to round 3 in the summer term. Well done everyone.

As a reminder tickets cost £15 per person, which includes a meal, and teams can be made up of maximum 6 adults. Log in to this link at 8pm on Monday to book your tickets: https://buytickets.at/fieldingptfa/675180

The PTFA have unlocked a new reward for anyone offering a £5 donation to support the crowdfunding project to raise money towards a Second hand uniform & bicycle Repair shop service on the school grounds. Along with the rewards for £20, £50 and £100 donations, the PTFA are now also offering a lemon clock for all £5 donations. making it easier for more of us to contribute to this great cause.

Lemon clocks are a fun and visual way of igniting a child's a love of science and helping them discover the science of batteries by simply adding your own lemon to turn your fruit into a power source. It teaches them about electrolysis and batteries and how they work together with the lemon to bring the clock to life. For further information on the campaign and to donate now, see this link: https://bit.ly/3HUs1St

The PTFA are delighted to announce the return of the Happy's Circus that this year will be run in conjunction with St Mark's school in Hanwell and held on their field. Tickets cost £10/person + a booking fee and will go on sale Tuesday 29 March at 8pm. There are 600 tickets for each performance, which will place on 14 and 15 May, 2:30 - 5pm. As the tickets will also be available to families at St Mark's, we're expecting them to sell out quickly. It's a great afternoon out with fun entertainment along with food from local restaurants and face painting on site. • Fielding attend Featherstone Tag Rugby Festival

Tue 22 Mar 2022 Dan Thomas

On Tuesday this week, Fielding took a team of 8 rugby players to Allenby Primary School to take part in this years KS2 Tag Rugby Festival. The festival was made up of 6 different tag rugby activities which were designed to test the players passing, evading, tagging and match play. We were paired up with St. Mark's Primary school which meant that we were due to directly compete against them in each of the activities. Our guys were excellent, throughout the morning as they were superbly captained by our only Year 6 child selected in todays team. Due to the format of the festival there were no overall winners but we were very happy that we were able to beat St. Mark's in each of the activities today! Well done everyone who represented the school so well today!
