  • Year 4 - The Home Stretch

Thu 16 Jun 2016 Mr. McConnachie

The final half term has arrived and to help year 4 fly through the home stretch, kites are being designed, made and tested with a summer time walk to Walpole park on the 12th and 13th of July.  Please feel free to bring in any kite materials from home, such as papers or plastic bags, or alternatively the children can use the materials provided in school for their ‘diamond’ paper kite.

This half term, RE and PSHE have combined to give the children an excellent understanding of community, diversity and identity. To consolidate their understanding, Year 4 have continued to explore British Values and have also been preparing for our trip to the local synagogue with a look into Judaism and the role of places of worship in the community.

Finally, with the end of any school year comes the opportunity to learn from all those marvellous mistakes made over the year and to show off what you have learned. Many in year 4 are looking forward to the final chance for a personal best in maths progress assessments and multiplication tables which will be spread out through the last weeks of the summer term and the final year 4 spelling test that will be completed during the first week of July. Time to practise!

  • Year 2 Values Sculpture Project

    Tue 14 Jun 2016

    Pupils learn about forging metal

Our Year 2 pupils were treated to a fantastic day of learning about how a blacksmith forges steel to make beautiful metal sculptures. This was all part of Year 2’s project to design this year’s values sculpture. The day started with a demonstration by the sculptor, Paul Margetts followed by an assembly presentation by Paul, where he showed images of his work and talked about the design process, including  the different techniques he uses. The day ended with the pupils putting their ideas on paper in order to give Paul an idea of the designs that they would like to see represent our school values in sculpture form. “It was so cool! When Paul put the metal in the fire it was glowing red and orange. When the steel was really, really hot, Paul used his hammer and anvil to shape the metal into a leaf.” explained Arineh, 2P.

“The pupils’ extremely thoughtful and creative designs have been taken away by Paul who will turn them into maquettes before presenting us with the finished sculpture early in the autumn term. We will be kept up to date with the progress of the sculpture at all stages of the process.” commented Mrs. Tate, Assistant Head.

  • Road Safety

    Tue 14 Jun 2016

Is everyone safe travelling to and from school?

As the vast majority of our pupils live within walking distance of school, families are strongly encouraged to walk to school. For those who have to use cars they are strongly encouraged to park away from the immediate vicinity of the school and to walk the last stretch i.e a ‘park and stride approach’. Families are strongly discouraged from parking directly outside school. Additional traffic and parked cars around school pose a serious unnecessary risk to children and their parents/carers as well as additional congestion which often delays all road users. Alarmingly, we are seeing a rise in reports of ‘near misses’, especially when pedestrians are crossing roads between or near cars where children are being dropped off. For everyone’s safety, car drivers are asked to avoid parking on the yellow zig zag lines in addition to on double yellow lines, especially those near Coombe Road and Northcroft Road. Please remember, many of our younger children will not be visible to a driver who is reversing. As a school family, we all have a duty and responsibility to not only keep everyone safe, but also to ensure they feel safe and secure. The PTFA are  currently running a competition for children to design a road safety warning sign.

  • Democracy in action!

    Mon 13 Jun 2016

    Star Leader elections

For the past few weeks, pupils in Year 5 have been getting thoroughly excited about the upcoming election for our new Year 6 Star Leaders. Pupils have been learning about democracy in class and they now have the opportunity to be part of a democratic election in real life. “It’s so exciting voting for our new Star Leader. But it’s going to be difficult to choose because all the candidates are so good!” explained Alex, 2P.

Year 5 pupils put themselves forward as candidates for the election after having such a good example set for them from the current Year 6 Star Leaders. They have been writing speeches, making rosettes and visiting classes to promote their leadership qualities. “The pupils have worked really hard on their election campaigns, their speech writing and delivery has been exceptional and we are incredibly proud of all the Year 5 candidates.” commented Mr Coe, Year 5 Lead Teacher.
