    Year group timetables

Typical weekly timetables for each age group are now available on the school web-site.  Fielding's school day focuses on learning and applying core skills in English and maths with a broad and balanced curriculum also emphasising science, music, French, physical education and sport.

  • Carry on learning Year 1 & 2

    Discretionary afternoon break time

Pupils in Year 1 and Year 2 have benefitted from a continuous afternoon session without a fixed, regular break-time since the start of term.

Last year teachers found that pupils could be so engrossed in their learning that they did not want to stop for an afternoon break; sometimes pupils needed a break earlier, reflecting the 'mood' of the class and some lessons needed to be shorter or longer than the timetabled slot reflecting the needs of our Fielding Learning Challenge Curriculum.

From September, afternoon breaks for Year 1 and 2 pupils are taken at the discretion of the class teacher.  Whole classes take a break together under the supervision of the class teacher as and when needed.  Individual teachers take the decision to either have an earlier break or a later break outside, a snack break and/or a focused brain-break using MindUp techniques in class, or no break in the learning, reflecting the needs of the class group and the planned learning for the afternoon.

"Teachers are best placed to know whether or when the pupils in their class need an afternoon break.  It's likely to vary with the age of the children during the school year, the type of learning being undertaken or simply the mood of children," explained Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.

"Since the start of term, all Year 1 classes have taken a break in the afternoon at a similar time because we felt that the children needed time to stop and play," added Miss Whaley, Year 1 Leader.

However, Mrs Tate, Assistant Head teacher said:"Year 2 pupils have taken snack and/or brain-breaks in the afternoon because they wanted to carry on with their learning tasks."

Break times for all other pupils are unchanged with Year 3 and older pupils always having an afternoon session with no break.

Typical timetables for each age group are now available for parents:

  • Do you know how we assess your child's learning?

    Thu 17 Sep 2015

Last week over 200 parents attended one of our assessment information sessions.

Parents came to one of our meetings to find out about national changes to  end of key stage assessments as well as how we assess learning and track progress at Fielding.

"The session was really informative, it helped 'unfog' assessment for me," one parent reported after the meeting.

"It was great that so many parents attended. As well as asking questions about how we assess pupils,  the session also gave parents an opportunity to raise questions and comment about other areas of the curriculum and organisation within school," explained Mrs. Haines, Deputy Head.

  • Home 'work' or home 'learning'?

    Thu 17 Sep 2015

New routines to improve learning at home

Regular reading at home, including completion of Reading Record books, and completion of targeted on-line activities are the highlights of our new home learning arrangements, launched today.

"We want our home learning policy to make home learning more consistent, accessible and child led.  We value all of the enthusiastic and supportive guidance parents give to their children at home and we want to assist with this to ensure all children meet their potential.

"We have reviewed current practice in order to give a more consistent message about what is expected of children outside school and hopefully encourage more children to take responsibility for their learning.

"The policy was adapted using academic research with a mixture of on line tasks, spelling practice, regular reading and choice of curriculum tasks," explained Laura Stabler, Assistant Head teacher for Learning & Teaching.

  • Safe drop-off and collection

    Wed 16 Sep 2015

    No parking on zig-zag lines

8 penalty notices have been issued by parking enforcement officers from Ealing Council in the past 2 days.

Keep zig-zag lines outside of our school gates clear at drop-off and collection times.  Since the start of the school year, too many cars have been parked on the zig-zag lines, making it difficult and unsafe for our pupils and other pedestrians to cross the road.

"Parents who park at the school gates or across the yellow zig-zag lines put our pupils in danger and risk a fine of £150.  Whatever the weather or shortage of time, there is no excuse for stopping a car on the zig-zag lines," explained Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.

  • Extended School and Clubs Consultation

    Wed 16 Sep 2015

    Have your say...

We believe that children benefit from having the opportunity to experience a wide variety of activities and learn and develop new skills. It would be impossible to provide all of these experiences within the school day and therefore our After School Specialist Club Programme should allow children to select activities that interest them most and develop skills further under the guidance of our specialist teaching team.

In addition to our specialist clubs we offer a before and after school care club facility. We know that the current range of opportunities for both childcare and specialist clubs available is far from the finished product and are looking at ways to strengthen the current model, in order to do this we will need to make some changes. We welcome parents views on what these changes might look like.
