  • School & Nursery term dates to July 2023

Mon 17 May 2021 Peter Dunmall

School term and holiday dates from September 2021 to July 2023 are now available. Key changes:

    • Occasional Day holiday added, when the school is closed to staff and pupils for Eid. This year over 100 pupils and many staff took a day of religious observance holiday. We want to meet the needs of our school community by closing and using Ealing's 'Occasional days' for this reason.
    • For 2021/22, this means term dates are adjusted by 1 day longer in the summer term. This is a change to the dates previously published. Eid is likely to fall around the May-day Bank Holiday, resulting in a four-day holiday weekend.

Attendance at Fielding continues to be very high, reflecting the way that our families value their children's education so highly. Please continue to make all holiday and other travel arrangements during school holiday periods.

Our assessment information shows that the more days pupils are in school, the more likely they are to succeed.

    Term dates:

  • Save the date. Fielding Summer Fair: The Great Comeback, Saturday 26th June

Wed 12 May 2021 School Office

COVID roadmap permitting, the Summer Fair will be back.  The PTFA have pencilled in this event for Saturday 26th June, with the theme of The Great Comeback. Save the date!

In line with COVID safe rules this will be an opportunity for families within year groups to come together as a school community.   The committee will be in touch with the class reps with more information. We have high hopes of making it a brilliant fundraiser as we still need to raise another £10k for schools enrichment programme. More information on what this includes listed here https://www.fieldingprimary.com/ptfa/

If your class has a great idea to run as a stall at the summer fair please get in touch with us at fieldingptfaevents@gmail.com as we would love to hear your ideas.

  • Our school caterer is changing - information needed for pupils with dietary needs

Tue 11 May 2021 Clare Haines

We are starting to prepare for our change in catering company. From September school meals will be provided by ISS Facility Services.

We know how important it is to get school meals right, especially for our pupils who need a special diet, that's why we are starting our handover process now. If your child has a food allergy, intolerance or medical need that means they need a special diet please read the ISS Dietary Safeguarding Policy linked below and complete and return the attached form via email with medical evidence to Jacqui Lacey at admin@fielding.ealing.sch.uk by 26 May 2021

We have not yet confirmed details of our menu with ISS yet, these are purely an example.

  • Deadline for signing up to learn an instrument in September is Friday 21st May 5pm.

    Mon 10 May 2021 Maria Neil-Smith

If your child would like to learn an instrument in school with an EMS tutor in September the deadline for signing up for lessons is Friday 21st May 5pm. Instrumental tuition is on offer to pupils in Years 2-6. Details of the instruments, prices and groups we offer can be found on the Music page of the school website- click here to view this information. To sign up for lessons, click here to complete the online ‘EMS Instrumental Tuition Booking Form’ before the deadline. Please read the terms and conditions for instrumental tuition before submitting the form- click here to view these. Lessons will be delivered by EMS tutors in school where possible or remotely on Zoom in the event of school closure. Fees have changed for this academic year to reflect the cost increase from the Music service and to maintain smaller group tuition on many of the instruments we offer. If your child is currently enrolled in instrumental tuition and would like to continue lessons there is no need to reapply, they will automatically be allocated a space for September unless we receive a cancellation form by Friday 14th May. Click here for the cancellation form.

  • Staff update

Fri 07 May 2021 Peter Dunmall

Ciarán McGann, Facilities Manager, leaves Fielding on 4 June. Ciarán has gained a promotion to take-up the post of Estates Manager at Northwood College.  We wish Ciarán well and will miss him for the quality of his work and humour.

Ciarán has worked at Fielding for over 10 years. During this time he has kept the building in excellent condition by managing contractors, undertaking repairs and making building improvements himself. Annual checks by the local authority to keep us all safe showed 100% compliance with all health and safety requirements. His strong personality and sharp wit matched the rigour of work, care and pride in our facilities.

Please congratulate and thank Ciarán if you see him. Cards and any gifts maybe left at the school office, if you wish.

We now start our recruitment process to find a new post-holder.

  • What did we see when we visited classrooms this week?

Thu 06 May 2021 Clare Haines

It was an absolute pleasure to visit classes in Years 1-6 this week and talk to children to find out about what they know and remember.

Myself, Mr Dunmall, Mr Lewis and Mrs Tate visited every classroom to look closely at what the children have been learning in the Fielding Learning Challenge Curriculum (this is pretty much everything that isn't reading, writing, maths or our specialist subjects).

The children wow'd us with their knowledge especially in history and science. Children talked enthusiastically about being historians and scientists, working scientifically, including investigating, collecting results, making observations and in Year 6, drawing conclusions.

The school was a hive of activity, children were actively taking part in their learning in every classroom. When asked they showed us and talked about their learning with pride and confidence. One pupil in Year 2 spoke of learning being connected and how one lesson turns into another, explaining to me how the Long Walk to Freedom was linked to learning about South Africa and some of their writing in English lessons. They could also explain the links between their learning in science and design and technology, using knowledge of properties of materials, to design their photo frames in design and technology.

Year 3 children were busy making canopic jars in art, linked to their knowledge of Egyptian pharaohs and burial rituals. This was the first time they had used Mod-roc for sculpture, they were very excited to show me how to apply it to their cardboard templates (even if some of them got more plaster on the tables, floor and themselves than on their jar!).

In Year 4, children used new technical vocabulary they have learned to describe tectonic plates. They told Mr Lewis about how they applied this knowledge when learning about tsunamis. They also recalled how this linked to their learning in DT when they used cams to make moving volcanoes.

In discussions with children in Year 6, children knew and remembered the key planned curriculum content for their age group. They described important characters and events, for example, Brunel and Darwin, and were able to explain their impact on our world today. The curriculum demands for pupils in Year 6 are high. Children make links between their learning, noting that the more they learn in one subject the more links are made in other subject areas.

In Year 1 classes visited, some children were busy drumming out beats on their African drums while other children were developing language in a design and technology lesson, using words such as axel and chassis. The children were working on the learning challenge, ‘How do the Wheels Turn on a Bus?’.

The quality of the art produced in their art sketch books showcased the children's developing skills, in line with the skills and knowledge planned on the whole school curriculum map, this was also seen in Year 2 sketch books where children and developed their skills in shading using different mediums in art. They were keen to tell me the difference between hard and soft pencils, wax crayons, oil paints and charcoal! They remembered all this from before the Christmas break, it was very impressive.

Year 5 children were keen to share their knowledge of trade and settlement they had learned about in their geography challenge about Dubai, this is because their teachers had explicitly taught concepts such as trade, invention and human settlement, children were able to identify and explain these concepts or 'golden threads' of learning.

We are looking forward to visiting reading lessons next and then classes in the Early Years to find out more about the exciting things they are learning about.

Children will be bringing home their English and mathematics books next week to share some of their learning with you.

  • Finding out what your child is learning, books home

Thu 06 May 2021 Clare Haines
