  • French Web TV for Children

    Wed 10 Feb 2016

This week children across the school have been introduced to Tivi5 Monde, a fantastic web-based French TV channel for children. Children can watch live and on-demand French programmes, as well as find links to many exciting French games and competitions.

It provides an excellent opportunity for language learners to listen to, and enjoy, spoken French in various contexts. Exposure to the sounds, rhythm, intonation and stress of the new language will greatly support their language development. Also, as learners begin to understand the spoken language the other skills of speaking, reading and writing will become easier. Tivi5 Monde can be accessed directly, or by using the links on our French pages.

  • Donate a book for World Book Day

    Wed 10 Feb 2016

    Thursday 3rd March

Join World Book Day at Fielding by donating a book to boost our class libraries and, if you wish, dress up as your favourite book character.

We are aiming to revitalise our book corners, take part in World Book Day and promote Discover London Children’s Book Swaps fifth birthday.

Families are asked to donate at least one new, used or unwanted book - more than one book will be welcomed.  Help us fill our class book corners with books for children to read, ideally from our school 'wish-list':

Books will be collected in classes, checked, sorted and then made available for children to read.

  • Safer Internet Day - 9th February

    Wed 10 Feb 2016

Safer Internet Day 2016 took place on the 9th February, with the theme ‘Play your part for a better internet!’ All children participated in class discussions about how they use the internet in a positive way and discussed what to so to stay safe online.

The children also decided on what they thought were appropriate rules for staying safe online. Furthermore, children made posters to encourage others to stay safe online and children in Key Stage 2 analysed e-safety scenarios and decided on appropriate responses.

Children really enjoyed the day and have deepened their knowledge of e-safety.

  • Reception - Fairy Tale Ball

    Fri 05 Feb 2016
Last Friday was a colouful affair along the Reception corridor. Each classroom was full of princesses, knights, dragons and even a few gingerbread men. The children came to school dressed as their favourite character from a story and attended the Prince Charming's Fairy Tale Ball.  Throughout the day there was lots of laughter and smiles as the children talked about their character and busted their moves on the dance floor.  Our current topic 'Who are all the famous characters in my books?' has really captured the imagination of the children.  When we look at books in class and during our daily Guided reading sessions the children are excited about who they might meet in each story.
  • Year 3 Maths

    Fri 05 Feb 2016

In Year 3 we have been focusing on multiplication using the 4 and 8 times tables. Pupils have begun to use multiplication in different contexts, including money and measure. We have looked at different strategies for how we can solve multiplication sentences and pupils have moved from partitioning method onto the grid method. Once pupils have shown that they are secure with the grid method they have moved down the progress ladder to deepen their learning. We have achieved this by applying our knowledge to solve problems.  Miss Oliver has stated, ‘I am truly impressed with the pupils’ abilities to apply their understanding. It was lovely to see pupils coaching each other to deepen their understanding.’

  • Space Spectacular in Year 5!

Fri 05 Feb 2016 Miss Pyle

This week, Year 5 have had two amazing space themed events.

On Monday we had a special visit from the Planetarium. The children got inside an inflated dome and watched in ore as they were shown the wonders and mysteries of the stars and our solar system!

On Wednesday, Miss O'Brien and her father came into the school to talk about eclipses. They learnt many amazing facts about how eclipses occur and how you can only see them in certain places of the world at certain times. The children also used special glasses to view the sun.

The children thoroughly enjoyed these two events and have gained a lot knowledge and understanding about our solar system- which will be very useful in writing their non-chronological reports!

  • Year 6 'Oliver!'

Thu 04 Feb 2016 Miss Drage

On Thursday, Year 6 took a break from their busy schedule and set off down the road to watch Elthorne Park High School’s production of Oliver. Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils at Elthorne stunned the crowd with their talented singing, acting and dancing.   The production was highly enjoyable and Year 6 pupils were delighted to spot familiar faces in the performing ensemble.

The pupils certainly seemed inspired and are already excitedly anticipating the production that they will be putting on at the end of Year 6.

    Nelson Mandela and Rosa Parks

Over the past few weeks the pupils have been enjoying learning about Nelson Mandela and Rosa Parks. This week, we have been learning how to write a recount from another viewpoint. Pupils started off by researching what a recount is, they explored the main features by using the class WAGOLL (what a good one looks like).  The key writing skill we were focusing on this week was the use of the conjunctions when, if and because in order to make simple sentences into complex sentences. We looked at how they can be used to improve sentences and which conjunction to use for different effects. Brandon, 2H, told us “It was amazing to learn all the different conjunctions; I now feel I would be able to use them in my future writing.”

All teachers have been impressed with the work ethic and skills the pupils are using confidently throughout the whole of year 2. Mr Theobald, 2S, explained. “It is amazing to see the pupils take such pride in their work and use the skills they have learnt throughout the week in the different pieces of writing.”

    Annual Parent Survey 2016

Each year we conduct an annual survey to find out parents views. On Friday 5th you will receive an email link to this year's survey. Your views are important to us, we would appreciate it if you could take the time to complete the survey.

Last year we received over 300 responses to our survey, you told us that:

    • Your children were happy at school
    • Your children felt safe
    • Your children were proud to be a part of our school
    • Your children were well looked after
    • Your children were taught well and made good progress
    • That the school was well led and managed

    You liked:

    • Our Values-based ethos
    • The size of the school
    • The sense of community
    • Our caring, positive ethos
    • Our facilities
    • The curriculum
    • The quality of teaching.

Some of the things you thought you would like to change or improve were:

    • Specialist language teaching
    • More of a focus on academic achievement, including basic skills
    • Improve communication with parents, but reduce use of parentmail
    • Improved use of the outside area
    • Wider range of extra curricular clubs
    • Homework
    • More timely information about your child's achievements and a better understanding of assessment systems

    Following your feedback we have:

    • Added French language teaching to our curriculum for all children from Reception to Year 6
    • Increased focus on reading, writing and maths with timetables teaching of basic skills - spelling, mental maths, multiplication tables
    • Improved communication by reducing the use of parentmail, all news now published to the website, with a follow up weekly bulletin. We have introduced web-based Year Group notice boards and use of social media to tweet any important messages or news. We have also held three 'Focus on..' information sessions, enabling you to hear about some of the changes we have made, to ask questions and give us feedback.
    • We are currently working with the children to develop the use of the outside area.
    • Increased the number and flexibility of extra-curricular clubs for all year groups.
    • In consultation with you, we have introduced a consistent home learning policy.
    • Moved parent consultation meetings to coincide with assessment cycles so that they are timely and relevant. Over 200 parents attended our Focus on Assessment sessions to find out about how our assessment system works.

"Views of parents combined with our own evaluation enables school leaders and the Governing Body to identify our strengths and areas for improvement.  Gathering views at this time in the school year supports our budget planning and shapes school improvement priorities for the next financial and school year.  All parents are encouraged to talk to their children and share their views with us through the on-line survey, " added Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.

If you do not receive an email link to the survey please contact the school office to update your email details. The survey will close on Monday 29th February.
