  • Get ready for Fielding's new approach to teaching reading in Years 3,4,5 &6!

Thu 15 Jul 2021 Philippa Whaley

From September, pupils in Years 3-6 (and from Summer term in Year 2) will be taught whole class reading in a similar format to English and maths lessons. Teachers have trialed this approach in some year groups this term with positive results. Lessons are engaging and challenging with the inclusion of explicit pre-teaching of vocabulary and reading skills such as prediction and inference. There are opportunities for pupils to practise each skill before applying it directly in the context of the class text.

This approach to the teaching of reading works best if each child has their own personal copy of the book. We have found that children take more care of their own book, are more motivated to learn and it build up their own personal library.

In preparation for September, we would like you to purchase a copy of the class book. Please see details below of which book your child's year group will be studying:

Year 3- Flora and Ulysses, Kate Di Camillo

    ISBN-10 1406354562

Year 4- The Borrowers, Mary Norton

    ISBN-10 0141333324

Year 5- The 1000 year old boy, Ross Welford

    ISBN-10 0008256942

Year 6- The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien

    ISBN-10 9780007458424

If your child has a pupil premium passport we will provide your child with a copy of the class text free of charge. Please speak to your child's class teacher if you do not receive a grant but will be unable to provide the book due to financial reasons.

  • UEFA Euro 2020 final

Fri 09 Jul 2021 Peter Dunmall

School is open to all staff and pupils as usual on Monday morning:

    • Breakfast Club and early Nursery, from 7.30am
    • main school, soft-start 8.45-9am, as usual
    • registration at 9am and absence phone calls to parents from 9am, as usual

Whilst many pupils and parents will want to watch the England (or Italian) team in England men's first, major football final for 55 years, we can live our school, work and leisure time without compromise. Pupils watching the football final and then attending school as usual sets positive expectations for life. The precedent has to be school as usual for all future notable events, irrespective of men's or women's sport or any other national event.

Parents know their own children best and can manage and plan for children's sleep needs. I would suggest that most children can cope with one late night followed by a couple of early to bed nights.

Teachers know their classes and pupils well. They have the flexibility to adjust their day and the demands of the day to match their class.

For a few pupils, late arrival at school might be better than not attending at all.

Alternatively, a national Bank Holiday might be granted ... ...!

  • Parent consultations on Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE lessons) at Fielding

    Fri 09 Jul 2021 Miss L Stabler

This year in our Relationships, Sex, and Health Education lessons or RSHE (previously called PSHE) we have been successfully trialling new units of work and lessons which cover the new statutory Health and Relationships curriculums.

Please see our PowerPoint introduction (found here) to the Relationship and Health curriculums and how we are implementing them at Fielding Primary.

Our initial overview for this subject, was created using resources and lessons from Ealing Health Improvement team, shows the mixture of health and relationships lessons that are taught from Nursery to Year 6. Following periods of school closure in the summer and spring terms we adapted our initial overview (found here) to focus on pupils' mental well-being  and rebuilding relationships. This means we changed the sequence of learning or included additional lessons to support pupils needs.

After trialling our new RSHE curriculum this year, we are consulting with parents again (last consultation about Relationship and sex education was in December 2019 when we were starting to prepare our new curriculum). Please complete the parent survey to share your views on our RSHE provision. Click here to fill in consultation survey.

This survey will close on Tuesday 20th July at 12:00pm.

What is taught in our RSHE lessons:

    Relationship lessons include:

    • families (including LGBTQ+ families and relationships)
    • caring friendships
    • respectful relationships
    • being safe
    • online relationships
    • being safe (covering personal safety and when you might feel unsafe around other children and adults)

    Health lessons include:

    • mental well-being
    • internet safety and harms
    • physical health and fitness
    • healthy eating
    • drugs, alcohol and tobacco
    • health and prevention (including sleep, allergies and teeth)
    • basic first aid (year 6)
    • changing adolescent body

Safeguarding, SMSC and British values are also golden threads weaved throughout our lessons.
