  • This week's Reading Celebrations

    Thu 18 May 2023 Philippa Whaley

    “Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift.” — Kate DiCamillo (author of The Tale of Despereaux, Flora and Ulysses- read in Year 3).

    A huge congratulations once again to the many pupils across the school who have been reading books for pleasure from the recommended reading lists and completing reading response activities in their pink book to achieve bronze, silver, gold and even platinum certificates! The options for these activities can be found in your child's reading record or on their year group noticeboard on the website. We look forward to celebrating further reading achievements next week!

    All pupils who attend Fielding are expected to read for 20 minutes at home every day. This may be to a parent, other adult or independently, if able. Teachers check pupils' reading records every day and sign them weekly to ensure that this is happening and will be following up with pupils and parents when it is not. As well as signing their reading record every day and writing the name of the book and pages they've read, pupils and parents are encouraged to record new words they come across and discuss the meanings of these together. Focussing on vocabulary is useful for developing knowledge and skills in multiple aspects of language and literacy. This includes helping with decoding (phonemic awareness and phonics), comprehension, and also fluency.

  • Pupils have chosen which charities we will be supporting next year

    Wed 17 May 2023 Clare Haines

    Our termly parliament assembly took place on Monday this week. The children voted on which charities they would like to support in the next school year.

    Star Leaders and Deputy Star Leaders researched a wide range of charities and came up with a short list for children to vote on.
    Each year children select 3 charities:

    • Local
    • National
    • Global

    Find out more about parliament assemblies here

    In the academic year 2023-24 the children have chosen to support:

    • Ealing Food bank as our local charity

    • Cancer research as our national charity

    • World Wildlife Fund (WFF) as our global charity

    We will support one of these charities each term with the whole school learning about what that charity does and supporting them with a fundraising event.

    In the meantime will continue to support the charities chosen for this school year. Information coming soon about an event for the WWF and RSPCA

    • Ealing hospital as our local charity
    • Cancer research as our national charity
    • Ukrainian Red Cross as our global charity

  • 2nd Place for the Year 5 & 6 Girls Cricket!

    Mon 15 May 2023 Natasha Pasha

    Today Years 5 & 6 Girls' participated in a Cricket Tournament with 6 local schools. Little Ealing, Acton Gardens, Selboune, Lady Margaret, St Marks and West Acton.

    For this competition, every school started off with 200 runs.

    If the opposing team take a wicket 5 runs will be deducted from the total score.

    Our first game was against Lady Margaret and the girls were nervous. We started off bowling wide which made the score line difficult to chase as 2 runs are awarded from every wide or NO ball. Unfortunately, we did not win this game with the final score of 251 runs to Lady Margaret and 246 runs to Fielding.

    Having played one game, Fielding were prepared when they played St Marks. The girls really improved their bowling to avoid awarding extra runs to the opposition. Martha (6H) score a hattrick when taking wickets and also hit quite a few boundaries. Flo H (6H) also scored two sixes and two fours which boosted our run rate. At the end of the game, Fielding won 272 runs and St Marks scored 213 runs as the girls got quite a few wickets.

    As a result of scoring a total of 518 runs across two games, we finished top of our group and were given a by straight into the semi-final.

    In the Semi-final we played Acton Gardens which meant we were through to the finals against Little Ealing. Who unfortunately beat us!

    Well done to the Girls for coming 2nd Place!

    A special thanks to...

    Lyla (6H), Flo H (6H), Martha (6H), Annabelle (6H), Lana (6F), Emma (6F), Evie (6S) Ella (5F), Lottie (5S), Flo G (5S)

  • Half-term chicken sitting

    Mon 15 May 2023 Elise Laird

    Would you like to do some chicken-sitting over the summer half-term holiday? We are looking for volunteers at half-term to feed and care for the chickens during the day and water some plants in the polytunnel (nature will likely take care of the plants growing outside). Volunteers can keep any delicious eggs that they lay the days you are caring for them.

    An online sign-up sheet can be found here. Please leave your email, address and contact details so that you can be sent access and feeding information. After you have looked after the chickens on the day you have volunteered for we ask that you pass the keys to the next volunteer so if you'd like to volunteer for more than one day it is best if the days are consecutive.

  • Ofsted outstanding

    Fri 12 May 2023 Peter Dunmall

    Ofsted say that Fielding continues to be an ‘outstanding’ school, #StillOutstandingFielding

    Back-to-back Ofsted outstanding judgements in February 2017 and now March 2023 show that the main school, Nursery and ARP give around 1,000 pupils every year the best possible start to learning and readiness for their next school.

    Fielding is the first primary school in Ealing to achieve an outstanding judgement under the current inspection framework, introduced in September 2019. Education commentators generally consider this framework to have the highest expectations on schools yet with an ‘outstanding’ judgement reflecting an ‘exceptional’ quality of education.

    The latest information from Ofsted for all primary schools inspected between September 2022 and March 2023 shows:

    • 5% are rated outstanding,

    • of the 55 previously outstanding primary schools, 40% kept their outstanding grade.

    The Governing Board, school leaders and staff are delighted that Ofsted continues to recognise the exceptional quality of our work across the school to provide the very best outcomes and start in life for our pupils.

    Our inspection was thorough, rigorous, and fair. Leaders and other staff felt listened to, had the quality of our work validated, and were energised from their work with Ofsted's inspectors.

    Ofsted's report highlights:

    • happy, safe and very well-behaved pupils who understand and respect diversity and differences;

    • an ambitious, rich curriculum for all pupils from Nursery to year 6, including those with special educational needs;

    • excellent professional development for staff resulting in the highest quality teaching;

    • exceptional teaching of phonics leading to older pupils loving reading;

    • wide-ranging and exciting opportunities for pupils to learn and develop personally;

    • rigorous culture of safeguarding and working with other agencies;

    • how our core values of respect, resilience, reflection and empathy underpin everything we do.

    His Majesty’s Inspector, Phil Garnham, led the inspection. He was joined by Ofsted Inspector, Jeff Coles for the first day. Ofsted’s ‘deep-dive’ approach uses sampling to draw overall conclusions. The inspectors completed deep-dives in early reading (including phonics), mathematics, music and history. They talked to senior leaders and subject leaders, scrutinised documents, visited lessons and talked to teachers, talked to pupils and looked in their books. The whole school from Nursery to year 6, including the ARP was included. A focus on pupils with special educational needs was weaved through all inspection activities. Pupils’ behaviour, the school’s approach to anti-bullying, safeguarding, wider pupil’s development and staff workload & well-being were also inspected. Discussions with governors, a wider group of staff and more pupils followed, including talking to pupils, informally at breaktime. Views of parents were collected and compared to in-school findings.

    For us, an outstanding judgement does not mean perfect. There is more that we want to do. Governors and school leaders have no hint of complacency. Our strength is continuing to evaluate the impact of our work and adjusting to give our pupils the very best education that we can. We anticipate our next inspection in around 4 years.

    For now, we would like to thank parents for their continued support and hope that pupils and parents will feel proud being part of the school. Parents can share their appreciation and thank a member of staff using social media and #StillOutstandingFielding

  • Relationships lessons in summer term for Years 1 -6

    Wed 10 May 2023 Miss L Stabler

    During summer term, in our RSHE lessons across the school, our main focus is on relationships. RSE (relationship, sex education) lessons are included in our summer relationships lessons.

    Relationships lessons are statutory and are taught in an age appropriate and respectful way. Pupils in Years 4-6 will be split by gender for some concepts for example puberty and menstruation to enable them to feel confident when asking questions. The content for each year group will be  communicated on year group noticeboards.

    There are two non-statutory elements of our RSE teaching:

    •Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which is covered in Year 4.
    •The human reproduction system and conception, which are taught in Year 6.

    As these are non-statutory lessons, parents have the option to view the lesson resources before they are taught and can speak to class teachers if they have concerns about their children being part of the lessons.

    In Year 4, FGM will be taught in an age-appropriate way in a singular lesson. This lesson will be taught in the week beginning 12th June. This important lesson has been planned with considerable research and thought and we encourage parents who are concerned about this, to look at the lesson resources and speak to class teachers. Resources for this lesson will be added to the year group noticeboard the week beginning 22nd May.

    Year 6 lessons on RSE will start from the week beginning: 3rd July. The first few lessons will cover puberty and menstruation. Then the last lesson will be the non-statutory lesson. Resources for this lesson will be added to the year group noticeboard the week beginning 19th June.

    Find out more about our RSHE lessons here.
