  • New Whole Class Reading Texts for September, Years 3-6

Tue 11 Jul 2023 Philippa Whaley

For the past two years, pupils in Years 3-6 have been taught whole class reading in a similar format to English and maths lessons. Lessons are engaging and challenging with the inclusion of explicit pre-teaching of vocabulary and discussion-based practice of reading skills such as prediction and inference.

As previously stated, this approach to the teaching of reading works best if each child has their own personal copy of the book. We have found that children take more care of their own book, are more motivated to learn and it build up their own personal library.

In preparation for September, we would like you to purchase a copy of the new class book. Please see details below of which book your child's year group will be studying:

            ISBN-10 1406354562

            ISBN-10 0141333324

            ISBN-10 0008256942

            ISBN-10 9780007458424

If your child has a pupil premium passport we will provide your child with a copy of the class text free of charge. Please speak to your child's class teacher if you do not receive a grant but will be unable to provide the book due to financial reasons.

  • Highest ever year 6 SATS results

Tue 11 Jul 2023 Peter Dunmall

Most year 6 pupils met the expected standard for their age in reading, writing and maths combined with nearly 1 in 3 reaching the higher standard. These are the highest year 6 results pupils at Fielding have ever achieved.

87% of our pupils met the expected standard in these combined areas this year, compared to 83% last year. Nationally, 59% of pupils met the expected level, unchanged from 2022.

Most year 6 pupils leave Fielding working at or above the expected standard for their age in individual subjects:

    • Reading, 90%
    • Writing, 92%
    • Maths, 91%

These outcomes are well above national figures. Reading is better than previous years. Nationally, reading outcomes fell.

Many pupils have achieved highly, working above the standard, with around half of the age group working above the expected standard in individual subjects:

    • Reading, 54%
    • Writing, 42%
    • Maths, 49%

These outcomes are excellent and are better than previous years, especially in reading.

These results are a credit to children, their families and teachers, especially given the impact of the pandemic. The pupils who took these tests this year were part-way through year 3 when schools first closed to most children in March 2020. Further school closures followed while they were in year 4.

Individual results will be given to pupils and parents in annual pupil progress reports, published today.

National tests in 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to the pandemic.

School performance tables, also known as 'league tables' will be published by the government later this year. We will receive comparative performance information in the Autumn term.

  • Site improvements

Mon 10 Jul 2023 Peter Dunmall

Contractors return on Monday to complete the last stage of works to the school field and playground. Works are expected to be finished by Friday. No disruption to pupils or visitors is anticipated.

Pupils in years 3-6 will gain a new library in September. Our current library at the front of the school is tired and needs refreshing. Our new design is bright and vibrant with plenty of display and storage space for books. There's enough seating for a whole class at a time, sitting in a range of different styles.

Teachers are researching and ordering new library books to better match the things pupils learn about across our curriculum. New book stock will include a range of fiction and non-fiction books to read in school and take home.

Mrs Hodge becomes full-time librarian to better manage our books, rotating book stock to match the curriculum taught in class each term for each age group.

Storing current books and stripping out the library has already started. New flooring and decoration will take place over the summer holiday. The new library is scheduled to be fitted on 21 September.

  • A change to how we manage behaviour in school

Fri 07 Jul 2023 Clare Haines

On Monday we held a parliament assembly with all pupils from Years 1 - 6. Parliament assemblies are a chance for pupils to work together in small mixed-aged groups, all focused on one thing. They are an important way of getting the view of pupils. The theme for Monday's assembly was 'Behaviour and Expectations'

    The need for change

    1. This year we have worked with pupils in Years 1 -6 on how to use the Zones of Regulation to help them self-regulate. We linked this to the Colour Monster in Nursery and Reception. This is going well, lots of pupils are able to use thier words to describe their emotions and feelings, and where needed use the strategies we have taught them to self-regulate.
    2. In this year's annual parent survey parents raised some questions about how our current behaviour system is used.

We wanted to find out more about what the pupils themselves thought. Pupils told us:

    1. What they liked about the way behaviour is managed.

    2. What they do not like about the way behaviour is managed.

3, What they thought our new Golden Rules should be.

Take a look at the attached images to find out what they told us.

    Next Steps

We will work with all adults in school to focus on how we can use the Zones of Regulation at the center of our approach to managing behaviour. This will include the removal of the 'traffic light system'. As we work through these changes we will keep you updated.

  • PTFA Reminder: School Disco - 8 July

    Thu 06 Jul 2023 PTFA

This is a reminder that on Saturday 8 July the PTFA will be holding the annual School Disco. The disco for the kids will be held by year groups in the school hall with a refreshment area for the adults outside. The disco is free and tickets are not needed, but a voluntary £1 donation for each child would be appreciated and can be given at the door.

This year kids can come before their disco time slot and get glammed up with some coloured hairspray or biodegradable face glitter for a nominal cost. The glam shop will be open from 12.30pm.

    Disco timings are as follows:
    Reception & Year 1:  1pm – 2:10pm
    Year 2 & 3:  2:30pm - 3:40pm
    Year 4 & 5:  4pm – 5:10pm
    Year 6:  5:30pm – 7pm

Only children for correct year groups can enter the disco at that time.

This is not a drop and go event; children remain parents’ responsibility at all times with at least one adult per five kids please. We look forward to seeing you there!
