  • Improving the dining environment for our children

    Tue 15 Mar 2016

    Bread baskets and table cloths!

There are so many proven benefits from improving the dining experience for pupils including promoting positive attitudes to food, happy and calmer children, improved social skills and relationships between children and adults and children. During the Autumn Term we asked the children how we could improve the dining environment, they told us they would like:

    • the dining halls to be less busy,
    • to be able to find somewhere to sit straight away, that was clean,
    • to sit for longer while eating and chat with their friends,
    • it to be more like home or eating a restaurant!

This term we have made changes to our two dining areas to improve both the dinning environment and the experience pupils have during their lunch time.

    Changes made so far:

    • new plates, dishes, cups and jugs, more like what the children would see at home or in a restaurant,
    • additional tables, change in table configuration and addition of table cloths, this has meant children can sit for longer in larger groups, it also makes the environment much more inviting,
    • salad bowls and bread baskets for sharing at each table,
    • allocated seating for classes, this means we are able to clean the tables, refresh cutlery and top up fresh water and bread before each class is called in, children don’t have to worry about where they will sit, it reduces queues and the busyness of the two halls,
    • encouraging children to take time over eating their meal without rushing out to break or worrying that another child needs their seat including an available space to sit and eat with as much time as they need after the rest of the class have gone out to break,
    • teachers and teaching assistants eating with pupils, to develop positive relationships away from the busy classroom as well as to encourage table manners and to encourage the children to finish their lunch,
    • routes in and out of the dining room improved, this means the two halls are less congested.

A child in Year 2 told us, “I really like the new table labels, they help us know where to sit usually I have to wander around and try and find somewhere to sit, I don’t like doing that!”

“Now we know there will be room for me and my friends rather than having to sit at two different tables,” added a Year 5 child.

We will continue with these arrangements throughout the Summer Term and seek the views and opinions from the children as we make the changes.

    Coming next:

Over the next term we hope to continue with the improvements and add:

    • new salad bars,
    • water coolers,
    • lunch-box storage,
    • coat pegs,
    • images on the walls to brighten up the environment,
    • lunchtime monitors for each year group.
  • Spring Assessment Update

    New this term...

In our parents survey some of you told us that you do not get enough information about your child’s progress, this term we are trialling ‘snapshot progress reports’ these will give you more information on what your child has learnt so far this year in the core subject areas. Snap-shot reports can be found by logging on to SPTO and selecting the ‘REPORTS’ tab. As this is a trial we are keen to get your feedback on these reports, please email us at assessment@fielding.ealing.sch.uk with any comments.

  • Football squad training after Easter

Mon 14 Mar 2016 Mr Thomas

Trials for Year 4 and 5 boys and girls squads

As I am sure many parents are aware Fielding has done very well with football this year. The boys squad were beaten finalists in the Featherstone tournament at the start of the year, winners of the Brentford Kids cup, beaten semi finalists in the South of England Kids Cup and still have a Peal Shield final to play. The girls squad have also enjoyed some success this year, themselves winning silver medals at the Featherstone girls tournament. The current squads have represented the school fantastically this year and have set a standard for us which we want to maintain and possibly even surpass next year.

After all of this football, the Year 5 and 6 competitive football calendar is now winding down for us and so we are starting to look forwards to next years squads. Therefore after Easter it will be Year 4 and 5 footballers being invited to squad training. To give everybody the chance to be in the squad we are opening up the first session back for boys and girls to anybody that wants to try out for the squad. From the children that turn up for that first session we will pick boys and girls squads to train for the rest of this year and the start of next year. As was the case this year, squad lists will be under review every term with players potentially coming into and leaving the squads.

Boys squad training will run every Wednesday morning from 7.45am-8.45am and girls squad training will run Thursday morning from 7.45am-8.45am.

    Open trial sessions

    Boys - 13th April, 7.45am - 8.45am

    Girls - 14th April, 7.45am - 8.45am

  • Updated Sport Relief Participant Schedule

Fri 11 Mar 2016 Mr Thomas

We have updated the schedule for the Sunrise to Sunset football match. There has been loads of interest and entries for the game are now closed. Although lots of people signed up for multiple slots it has not been possible to give everybody all of their selected slots.

To make the slots as fair as possible and to give the children a better chance of getting involved we have tried to keep each slot based around a similar age group. This has meant that some children have been given a slot which they did not mark down as their preferred slot. I hope this suits everybody still, however if there are any issues please feel free to let me know and I will do my best to accommodate.

Thank you once again for all of your support with the game. The number of people who have wanted to get involved has been fantastic and the money we have raised already has been amazing! We really do have a great school here so well done everybody for being part of it!

One week until kick off...see you there!
