  • The chicks have moved in!

Fri 05 Jul 2019 Ellie Lock

"I'm not sure about the new neighbours."

Rosa, Florence, Elizabeth and Victoria (especially Victoria), were extremely suspicious when Mr Webb brought the chicks into their new home today. They had a close look at the tiny invaders, then retreated to a corner and blasted out their finest alarm calls.

    What did the chicks do?

    Completely ignored them.

This is going to be interesting... all the latest garden news here.

  • Fielding Nursery Holiday Club

Fri 05 Jul 2019 Tracy Cherry

Fielding Nursery are looking forwards to the summer holiday club, we will be open from the 22 July to 23 August 2019, you can choose to book your regular sessions or sessions that differ from term time depending on your needs. This year has flown past so quickly it seems unbelievable that we have almost reached the summer holidays again!

We have been planning an action packed summer with all the activities that the children love to access during holiday time. We have more messy activities planned including Gelli baff, outdoor foot and hand prints, giant bubble making and much more. We will be baking cakes and biscuits, making pizza and much loved fruit skewers. We will be practicing our chopping and cutting skills and then feeding the chickens with our expertly prepared lettuce and cucumber.

The children are always so excited by the pirate ship and exploratory play using loose parts, it is lovely to watch their imaginations run wild. We will be visiting the school field and forest, these are always a firm favourite. We are also looking forward to enjoying our lunch outdoors whenever we can, and being outdoors as much as we can.

You can book your child's sessions via your Laser account and places are available for children who are currently attending the nursery, please remember to book early to avoid disappointment.

  • Year 2 Outstanding pupil outcomes at the end of key-stage 1

Fri 05 Jul 2019 Peter Dunmall

    Stretch and challenge

The vast majority of Year 2 pupils (85%) have met the government's expected standards in reading, writing and maths at end of key-stage 1 assessments.  Over a third of pupils met the standard to be working at greater depth.

For our 2 disadvantaged pupils in Year 2, both met the expected standard in reading, writing and maths.  The school is committed to removing barriers and enabling our disadvantaged pupils to achieve and thrive.

Since the end of Reception, virtually all year 2 pupils have made expected progress from their different starting points, especially in maths and writing with up to one-third making more than expected progress.

Outcomes were highest in maths, closely followed by writing and then reading. Over half of pupils are working at greater depth in maths or reading, far higher than 26% nationally, last year. Maths outcomes continue to reflect our recent school improvement priority and professional development for teachers.  Pupils have successfully developed a deeper understanding of maths concepts and improved their ability to apply their knowledge to new problems as a result of our use of apparatus, visual representation and emphasis on fluency with basic skills in class.

  • Reception excellent learning outcomes

Fri 05 Jul 2019 Peter Dunmall

Most pupils ready for Year 1

86% of pupils in Reception this year have achieved the government's 'good level of development' standard, reflecting their readiness to start learning in Year 1.

Last year, 86% of Fielding's pupils achieved a good level of development compared to 72% of children nationally.  Fielding's results have improved and remained very high year-on-year since 2013 when the school was just in line with the national average.

Children are defined as having reached a good level of development at the end of the Early Years if they have achieved at least the expected level in:

    • the early learning goals in the prime areas of learning (personal, social and emotional development; physical development; and communication and language)
    • the early learning goals in the specific areas of mathematics and literacy.

Only 2 pupils are entitled to Pupil Premium funding for disadvantaged pupils.  Of these pupils, 1 just missed the criteria for GLD and 1 achieved GLD with high attainment in each area.

Girls perform slightly better than boys although our gender gap is less than that nationally.

Teachers have carefully planned learning this year so that pupils develop holistically across a wide range of areas in the Early Years Foundation Stage

  • Year 1 Phonics excellence

Fri 05 Jul 2019 Peter Dunmall

    97% success in screening check

Nearly every Year 1 pupil at Fielding, irrespective of their background or starting point, has successfully passed the government's phonics screening check this year as a result of highly effective teaching and support for individual pupils.  Moreover, 85% of our pupils gained a score of at least 37 marks out of 40.  The threshold pass mark was 32.

Nationally every June, hundreds of thousands of five and six year old children in Year 1 take the phonics screening check - reading aloud a list of 40 words, which is marked by their teacher.  The check is a list of 40 words; 20 of them are real, 20 are nonsense words, such as "quass".  Nonsense words are denoted with a monster to make it clear to children that they are the monster’s "names".  These are included to show that children are using their knowledge of letters and sounds and have not merely memorised words.  Pupils apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to decode and read the words aloud.

Last year, all of our pupils met the required standard compared to 82% of pupils nationally.

Success at Year 1 in the phonics screening check is important to us because it helps our pupils to read fluently by the start of Year 2, providing a secure base to reach the higher standard of reading by the end of Year 2.

Highly effective teaching by all adults working in Year 1 has included daily teaching of phonics, identifying letter sounds which pupils find hardest to learn and providing support to individual pupils and their parents.  During Reception and Fielding Nursery, pupils are introduced to letters and sounds which provides an excellent foundation for the start of their learning in Year 1.

In Year 2, two pupils had to re-take the test because they did not pass or missed the check in other schools at the end of Year 1 last year.  Both successfully passed the test this year.  These pupils have benefited from a programme of support during Year 2 to enable them to catch-up with their peers.

  • Can you volunteer an hour or two at the Circus?

    Thu 04 Jul 2019

Next weekend, Fielding is hosting the Happy Circus for three consecutive days (14-16 July).  We will have nearly 1800 people over the three performance - which includes welcoming other local schools to Fielding.

As you can imagine it's a massive task to host this event but it's not something that can be covered by the core PTFA volunteers alone.

We are after any parents who are willing to donate an hour or two of their time to help us deliver this final event of the year and get the PTFA funding over the £44k mark.  Even if you have never helped before you will find it a rewarding experience.  You might even find that your employer will pay you to help (like GSK!).

Roles include Ticket Scanning, Bar Staff, Ice Cream stall, First aid, Tidy Up and Entry Stewards. Sign up at https:signup.com/go/HsWnywa
