Fielding
Primary School and Nursery
Keep up to date with all the news happening in the school at the moment. Articles are added during the week. Parents are encouraged to check regularly. Our weekly bulletin, emailed directly to parents, summarises content for the week.
Please note that all lost property will be placed on a table every day morning and afternoon underneath the canopy outside the main hall from now until the end of term (Tuesday 19th July). Any items which are remaining or not labelled after this time will be discarded.
Please have your children check their class areas before the end of term. No lost property is kept at the school office. Thank you.
68% of Fielding's Year 6 pupils met the government's tough new standard for reading, writing and maths. Nationally only just over half (53%) of 11 year-olds made the grade.
This year's tests were more demanding and were based on a new curriculum with far higher expectations than before.
Our Year 6 pupils have performed very well compared to all pupils nationally:
Fielding's Year 6 | National | Comparison |
Maths, 84% | 70% | +14 |
Reading, 74% | 66% | +8 |
Grammar, 83% | 72% | +11 |
Writing, 85% | 74% | +11 |
Previously, attainment at the end of key-stage 2 was measured in National Curriculum Levels with Level 4c being the expected standard for pupils in their final year of primary school.
However, in the new tests, the expected level is set at 100 but scores can range between 80 and 120. This means that any score at 100 or over is considered as meeting the expected standard and anything else is below.
"We were especially pleased with our maths results this year because maths has previously been our weakest subject area at the the end of Year 6. Teachers have worked hard to improve the quality of our maths teaching, raising their expectations and giving children more chances to apply, reason mathematically and explain their thinking.
"Reading outcomes nationally are much lower this year reflecting a far higher level of challenge. Nevertheless, our pupils have also performed very well in reading compared to their peers nationally, " explained Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.
"Congratulations to all of our pupils on their individual results, reflecting their effort and hard work, " added Miss O'Dwyer, Year Leader.
School leaders and the Governing Body will analyse and evaluate results further when a full set of comparative information is released by the government in September.
Nationally, there are mixed views about the change in test arrangements. Read more:
The majority of pupils in Year 2 have made expected progress in reading, writing and maths since leaving Reception with many making more than expected progress, especially in writing.
A very high proportion of children have met the government's expected standard for Year 2 including nearly one-third of pupils working above the expected standard for reading and maths.
Disadvantaged pupils, who receive additional funding from the government, have all achieved highly compared to other pupils in school, giving them the best possible start to Year 3.
In reading, 17 out of 18 pupils passed the phonics screening re-check, having had extra help during Year 2 to support their understanding of letters and sounds. Over half of these children scored 38 marks, or more, out of 40 this year having not met the government's pass mark at the end of Year 1.
Progress in writing has been especially rapid with the majority of pupils making more than expected progress during Year 1 and Year 2. Writing outcomes for this cohort were low at the end of Reception. Focused teaching during Year 1 and Year 2 has resulted in pupils catching-up.
Maths is the strongest subject area, closely followed by reading where 85% and 84% of pupil met the required standard respectively.
Full summary results will be published shortly on the school's website.

As this school year is coming to an end we are now starting to plan for sport next year at Fielding. With this in mind we would like to announce news of squad trials for mixed tag rugby, boys football and girls football. Each trial is open to Year 5 and 6 children who would like the opportunity to be part of a sports squad which offers the opportunity to represent the school at competition. All eligible children are warmly welcomed to attend the trial day, after which squads will be picked based on performance, ability and attitude. Successful children will then attend training before school on their squads allocated day with the further aim of being selected in teams to represent the school. Please remember that the trials are for squad selection and do not guarantee a place on a sports team at a competition. However, to be selected to represent the school you must be part of the squad and so the trial days are very important for children with those sporting ambitions.
Times and dates for the trials are below:
If you have any questions about the trials, please don’t hesitate to ask Mr Thomas or Mr Winn. Good luck and we hope you have an active and healthy summer!
