  • Behaviour policy update, introducing Zones of Regulation

Mon 18 Jul 2022 Clare Haines

Each year we update our behaviour policy so that it is inline with government behaviour expectations and aligned with our school values.  The principles behind the policy are set by the Governing Board.

From September, we will be working with the children to introduce a common language for describing feelings and emotions. This is based on 'Zones of Regulation'. Children in Nursery and Reception will be introduced to these by using the book 'The Colour Monster'. We will be holding a parent workshop in the autumn term all about this, so look out for the date.

The Zones of Regulation® is a framework for teaching children strategies for emotional and sensory self-management. The zones help children identify how they are feeling in the moment according to their emotions and level of alertness, as well as guide them to strategies to support regulation. There are four colours or ‘Zones’ blue, green, yellow and red.

Blue Zone -   used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored.

Green Zone - used to describe a calm state of alertness. A pupil may be described as happy, focused, content or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs.

Yellow Zone -  also used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions; however, individuals have more control when they are in the Yellow Zone. A pupil may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the Yellow Zone.

Red Zone - used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness and intense emotions. A pupil may be elated, euphoric, or experiencing anger, rage, explosive behaviour, devastation, or terror when in the Red Zone.

  • High temperatures forecast for next week

Fri 15 Jul 2022 Peter Dunmall

Temperatures are forecast to be very high on Monday and Tuesday next week. The government expects schools to remain open with all pupils attending school in person. Nursery, main school, childcare (before and after-school), and specialist clubs are all expected to be open as usual.

We have reviewed and considered advice from the government and Ealing Council. We talked to staff at our weekly briefing this morning. Preparations include:

    • purchase of additional fans to increase air flow for the hottest classrooms - on the first floor, in the oldest parts of the school building and those facing south - including all year 4 and year 5 classrooms, class 6H and class 6F.
    • flexibility for teachers to move classes for periods of time to cooler parts of the school, for example, outside in shade, or use of the school's halls.
    • no PE takes place on Mondays. PE lessons on Tuesday could move indoors with a lower level of activity.
    • any combination of indoor play and/or short periods outside for morning and lunch breaks, depending on the weather and temperature.
    • already, windows open safely in all classrooms, internal doors remain open, to maximise air flow through the building.
    • pupils are able to drink water freely during the day, including during lessons.
    • summer school uniform matches warm weather conditions and should be worn. Polo style t-shirts can be relaxed to any plain white or blue t-shirt if families wish. If pupils do not already own or wear school style shorts, any plain grey or black shorts may also be worn for more flexibility.

Schools are unique. Each school operates in different circumstances. Some schools may close, or partially close, depending on their individual circumstances, approach and attitudes to risk. We mitigate risks, remain flexible and intend to operate as normal.

If parents choose to keep children at home due to the heat then this is likely to be marked as an unauthorised absence. However, in a small number of cases, if there is an underlying medical condition, we may authorise absence on a case by case basis.

There are no further cases of COVID-19 in class teachers. Those who have had COVID-19 this week have either returned to work or are expecting to return to work next week. This is lifting pressure on covering staff absence and/or splitting classes to work in other classrooms.

In the unlikely event that utilities or the water supply to the school fails, we may be forced to close at short notice. This will be last resort. Depending on the length of any closure, we may switch to remote learning by Microsoft Teams.

  • PTFA School's Out Summer Picnic - Important Info and Volunteers

    Thu 14 Jul 2022 PTFA

The PTFA is running its last event of the academic year on Saturday and we have some important information for anyone planning to attend.  You can still purchase tickets at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/fieldingptfa/715659/

    • Volunteers: We are really light on volunteers to help out on the BBQ (5pm-6pm and 6pm-7pm) and some of the later slots on the Bar. If we don't get these covered then we'll sadly close them down completely. If you can spare a bit of time please sign up at https://fieldingptfa.ivolunteer.com/fieldingpicnic_002  This is where the PTFA makes the most money!
    • Entrance Gate:  Please use the Fielding Walk gate - which is located on the footpath that links Northcroft Road with Midhurst Road. It is to the south/back of the school grounds. No other gates will be open. Gates only open for 30mins at 2pm, 5pm, 7pm and 9pm. There will be a key holder at the bar or Nolan O'Connor will be around to let people out if timings become difficult but we try to limit access due to volunteers.
    • Bar/BBQ/refreshments:  We plan to run a bar and BBQ during parts of the afternoon.  This includes a freezer with ice lollies. Cash and card will be available. Samosas Direct will also be serving fresh samosas until about 5pm (depending on when stock runs out).
    • Water Play: We'll have a sprinkler running close to the Kitchen Garden Area and we will also have a couple of bins filled with water should children want to bring down water pistols. The area won't be managed by adults so you may want to oversee things. A change of clothes for the children may also be advised.
    • Fire Engine Visit:  We are expecting a visit from Ealing Fire Brigade at 2.30pm. Unless they are called for an emergency, then they will be coming in via the Coombe Road entrance but cannot access the school field due to building works.  We'll announce it via the PA system, but it's not necessarily loud enough to go across the whole field.
    • Q-Bot Challenge: For the first time, the Summer Picnic will be showcasing a Human vs Machine challenge.  These robots usually work hard to fight climate change by insulating, and thus reducing CO2 emissions, from thousands of homes around the UK.  Children and adults alike will be able to have a go at controlling these robots in a competition organised by Q-Bot (a London company that uses robots to insulate homes https://q-bot.co/robotic-under-floor-insulation)
    • Gazebos:  Feel free to bring a gazebo or anything else that might help shade you from the sun.  There will be a mallet and stake to help make a hole in the grass, but the ground is very hard.  We expect shade under the trees to be in high demand
    • Toilets: The School House will be open for us to use as the main school building will be closed.  Toilets are located on the ground floor of the School House (just through the kitchen) or at the top of the stairs.  The school house is located at the front of the school and can be accessed by walking around the side of the school by the Kitchen Gardens Year 3 classrooms.
    • Covid:  Although the school has highlighted a rise in Covid cases at the school, the Picnic is still planned to go ahead due to it being outside and generally socially distanced unlike the classroom.  If you or anyone in your family experience any symptoms then please test before attending the picnic.

Thanks again for your support and look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

  • How do you travel to school?

Thu 14 Jul 2022 Peter Dunmall

A hands-up travel survey of pupils in class shows that most pupils travel to school by walking, cycling or scootering. Far more pupils get to school by scooter, bike, bus or train/tube than by car:

    • Walk to school, 62%
    • Scooter, 14%
    • Cycle, 8%
    • Bus, train or tube, 3%
    • Car, 13%

Thanks to most families for travelling to school in a healthy and sustainable way.

These proportions are unchanged since our last travel survey. Pupils tell us that just over 100 of them usually travel to school by car. Reasons vary from living too far away or being dropped off by parents on the way to work. Some of these pupils live less than half-a-mile away from school but travel by car. Our school travel plan sets a target to reduce car use to below 10%:

    • If you drive to school, could you walk, even on some days?
    • Could you park in surrounding roads and walk the last part of your journey?
  • Glasses and specs need their owners

Wed 13 Jul 2022 Peter Dunmall

Lost glasses and specs are in the Welfare Room missing their owners. Parents, please check photo and your child. If glasses or specs are missing, please visit the Welfare Room to collect a lost pair.

  • COVID-19 rising and risk of partial closure

Wed 13 Jul 2022 Peter Dunmall

10 members of staff, including 4 class teachers, have tested positive for COVID-19. Over the last week, there is a steady increase in the number of members of staff becoming unwell and then reporting a positive test for COVID-19.

Today, 5 agency (supply) staff are covering classes. All planned release time for teachers is cancelled so that we are prioritising keeping classes in school and open to pupils.  Agencies tell us that they have no other staff available for cover, explaining rising need for cover in other schools and cases of COVID-19 in agency staff.

There is a risk that any further absence of class teachers due to COVID-19 will result in individual age groups being sent home to learn at home by Microsoft Teams. This is a last resort. Nevertheless, parents are encouraged to think about your own contingency measures should a year group close and be ready to switch to using Microsoft Teams at home.

In Year 6, pupil absence is high. Today, 4 pupils report a positive test for COVID-19. A further 28 Year 6 pupils are absent from school with possible symptoms of COVID-19:

    • French cafe event, due to take place on Monday after school, is cancelled to reduce risk of infection transmission beyond the year group;
    • Graduation event, due to take place on Friday 22 July may switch to a virtual, video conference event.

We are worried about the risk of COVID-19 infection to Year 6 pupils, their parents who attend the in-person Graduation event and knock-on infection to wider family groups and travel plans at the start of the school summer holidays. We will look at Year 6 absence on Thursday and make a final decision about Graduation.

Update, Thursday 14th: all parents of Year 6 children have been emailed today with an update on logistics for the graduation ceremony due to take place on the 22 July.

The ceremony will now take place in two parts.
    Part 1, 9:30-10:15. 6H & 6F

    Part 2, 1:30- 2:15, 6P & 6S

doors will open 15 minutes before each event.

  • Fielding finish 5th at Featherstone Athletics competition

Mon 11 Jul 2022 Dan Thomas

On Thursday, last week Fielding took a team of Year 5 athletes to Perivale athletics track to compete in this years Featherstone Athletics competition. Our 16 athletes were due to compete across 4 track and 4 field events against 15 other primary schools.

We were competitive in each of the events but were also very pleased to medal in 3 different events as we won silver in the girls 80m, silver in boys 600m and silver in the boys long jump. Consistency across each of the other events also meant that as a team we finished in 5th place.

Considering we had a team made up of entirely of Year 5 pupils against mostly Year 6 students this was a great result. A huge well done to each one of of our athletes for representing the school so well.
