  • Safeguarding Pupils - Government Prevent Strategy

    Wed 21 Oct 2015

Schools have a duty to prevent radicalisation and extremism

In July 2015 the duty was placed on schools to safeguard pupils from the threat of being drawn into extremism. This means we have a duty to protect pupils from violent extremist views in the same way we safeguard them from the harm of violence and abuse.

"Different schools will apply the prevent strategy in different ways," explained Mrs Haines, Deputy Head. "At Fielding we follow a Values-based education, teaching the British values of to tolerance and respect, this teaches our pupils some of the skills they need to keep themselves safe both now and in the future."

How to complete your child's reading record

Some parents have asked us for guidance on how to complete their child's reading record. We have put together some examples, link at the end of this news feature.

Miss Whaley, English Leader offers the following guidance, "We know time is precious, if possible please listen to your child read every day, even if it is only a couple of pages of a book. Write the date and name of the book  in a new box and sign your name/initials.

In the 'remarks' column, briefly write about what you heard, how your child read, any words which your child found tricky to read or did not know the meaning of and/or anything that you discussed with them about the book."

"Sometimes, we understand that you may be in a rush and don't have the time to write a lengthy comment- in this instance, please write the date and sign to say that you listened to your child read, " added Miss Stabler, Assistant Head.

Your child's class teacher will view your child's reading record once a week and sign their initials

  • Fielding widens its support for charities

    Mon 19 Oct 2015

Local and European charities to be sent shoeboxes this Christmas

During assembly today pupils were introduced to three charities. Following feedback from some parents, in addition to supporting the Samaritan's Purse appeal, we have increased choice for families by adding two other 'shoebox' gift options:

    • Rotary Shoebox Scheme, supporting the people of Eastern Europe, children to bring in their decorated shoeboxes (with £2), once numbers are known we will transfer the contents to the Rotary Club boxes, ready for collection.
    • A food-bank shoebox to be donated to a local,  Ealing foodbank.

"The original Samaritan’s Purse shoebox, along with the additional shoebox options, continue to be entirely voluntary at the discretion of parents.  Families may choose not to participate at all, support all or any of the charitable options," explained Peter Dunmall, Headteacher.

"Through our continued charity work pupils are given the opportunity to actively live our values such as Unity, Responsibility and Compassion, enabling the school community to make a positive contribution to the wider world." added Ms Biedul, Assistant Head.

Pupils (and parents) enjoy creative home learning

Choice and imaginative, creative tasks have helped engage pupils in their home learning so far this term.  However, some parents have been worried about a lack of time to complete activities and gain enough ‘points’ due to busy family routines, activities and work.

“We’d like to thank all parents for being so patient and trialling our new home learning policy with us. It's been great to hear so much positive and constructive feedback from parents because we want to get homelearning right,” explained Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.

“The pieces that have been produced so far in home learning books or as separate pieces look amazing and we are looking forward to celebrating these in class next week.  The purpose of this homework is to create interest in our curriculum areas and for children to take responsibility for their own work.  We don’t want to overload families with an excessive amount of work at home.  Please use the points system as a rough guide.  Parents should feel free to use their discretion to achieve as many points as possible but focus more on the children choosing and completing tasks that are relevant and interesting to them, “ added Laura Stabler, Assistant Head teacher.

Reading regularly at home was already an established routine for many families.  Our new Reading Records now allow us to track and monitor pupils’ reading beyond school – helping us to support pupils where reading is not yet established at home.

Repetition, consolidation and practice of maths and English taught in class has strengthened pupils’ learning.  Research tells us that a knowledge of spelling patterns and use in sentences is the best way for children to learn to spell.

“I’m looking forward to each class sharing their home learning next week when pupils will  receive feedback from their peers.  I will write again next week sharing some of the exciting pieces produced by children, “ added Miss Stabler.

  • Year 1 Shape

    Fri 16 Oct 2015

    Investigating properties of 2D shapes.

This week, Year 1 began a new Maths topic: 2D and 3D shapes. On Monday, some of the children went on a shape hunt around school to find shapes in everyday school life. “This activity enabled the children to explore the topic of shape in a hands-on, practical way” said Mrs. Gill, Higher Level Teaching Assistant. The children also sorted 2D shapes into Venn diagrams according to their properties. “We counted the sides and the corners and sorted the shapes into the correct Venn diagram hoop according to the heading” said Evan.

    Star constellation earns treat

Pupils in Hercules constellation have earned a treat next week by finishing first this half-term with 343 points, narrowly beating Orion by just 1 point.

Star Leaders chose a movie and pizza afternoon as their treat which will take place on Tuesday next week.

Pupils earn a star for themselves and one for their constellation team everyday when they make the right choices and avoid 'red' behaviour.  Additional stars can be gained when pupils hsow exceptional behaviour underpinned by our values.  Star pupil leaders collate results from all classes every week and convert these into whole school points.  Points are added together every half-term with the winning constellation earning a treat of their choice.

Individual pupils are currently working on gaining our Bronze certificate for 50 stars since the start of term.  The first certificates will be issued shortly to successful children.

  • Fielding children continue to support communities with charity work

    Thu 15 Oct 2015

Charitable shoebox donations will be welcome in November to support 'Operation Christmas Child'

Following on from the Year 6 highly successful fundraising coffee morning for Macmillan, children across the school will be learning about our next charity campaign. During assemblies on Monday 19th October children will be introduced to ‘Operation Christmas Child’.

Since 1990, ‘Operation Christmas Child’ – an initiative of the Christian relief and development agency Samaritan’s Purse – has been blessing underprivileged children around the world with gift-filled shoe boxes wrapped and packed by children and adults in the UK, supporting multi-faith and multi-ethnic children in need.

As part of our school’s wider curriculum, developing the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) experiences of our pupils, and actively living out our values such as Unity, Responsibility and Compassion, enables the school community to make a positive contribution to the wider world. In the view of a year 6 pupil,“The opportunity to make another child smile on Christmas Day makes me feel good. When I wake up on Christmas Day knowing that when I open my gifts, somebody else is unwrapping the one I made them makes me feel like I have made a difference. I will enjoy it more knowing I might have made them smile.”

The idea is simple. Children wrap and pack shoeboxes with a range of gifts and bring to school between the 1st and 18th of November with a £3.00 donation, which covers the transportation costs. Samaritan’s Purse state:

“Each shoebox is an unconditional gift, given to a child with nothing asked for, or expected in return; no pledges, no obligation; ‘no strings attached.”

The shoeboxes will be collected and then distributed by Samaritan’s Purse. For further details about shoebox ideas – dos and don’ts please visit the link: https://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/how-to-pack-a-shoebox/

These details will be shared with children in the assembly and discussed within class, followed up by a lesson where children will be able to plan, decorate their box and create resources for their box to contain.

Curriculum lead, Ms. Biedul commented, “Throughout the school year, Phases and year groups will be evaluating the opportunities children have to develop their SMSC in light of the new Fielding Challenge Curriculum, and identify further learning opportunities. Bringing the whole-school together on ‘Operation Christmas Child’, allows all children to collaborate in a shared experience providing a sense of community.” For further details, please speak to your Year Leader.

  • Parent Governor

    Thu 15 Oct 2015

    Nominations

Parents are being asked to nominate themselves or another (willing) parent to become our new Parent Governor.  Nomination forms were sent to all parents yesterday by pupil post (or Royal Mail where parents live separately).

"Ealing's Governance section has told us that we must use traditional paper based methods to recruit our new Parent Governor.  We'd much prefer to use web and e-methods for parents to nominate and vote, " explained Peter Dunmall, Head teacher.

It is anticipated that more than one parent will be nominated to become a governor resulting in the need for a ballot.  Next steps:

    • Nominations close Wednesday 21st October.  If only 1 parent is nominated, result with be declared with no ballot.
    • Ballot papers distributed to youngest sibling, Monday 2nd November
    • Election closes, Monday 9th November
    • Ballot count and result, Tuesday 10th November
